Barbour Memorial Hall is a registered Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) with registration number SC050203. We are a two-tier SCIO, meaning that our legal structure is made of up two distinct bodies: a board of trustees who govern the organisation and a membership body which controls aspects of its activities. The way our charity is governed is set out in our constitution. Please read this before completing a membership application.

Membership is open to anyone living within the Caerlaverock area of Dumfries & Galloway that support the mission and objectives of Barbour Memorial Hall, and are at least 16 years old. To become a member, you must complete an application form which will be reviewed and confirmed at our next trustee meeting, unless there is an extraordinary reason for refusal. We encourage you to join us as a way to get closely involved with the work of the hall. 

Members have two legal duties:

• To act in the interests of the charity and put the interests of the charity before any other.
• To ensure that the charity operates in a manner consistent with its purposes.

Members can:

• Vote at Annual General Meetings
• Stand for election as a charity trustee
• Request changes to the constitution
• Request a special members’ meeting to, for example, change the constitution or to ask the Board of Trustees to do something or take a particular step.

Your membership is important to us because:

• It makes our charity more accountable to our community.
• It demonstrates to funding bodies that we have the support of the community in what we are trying to achieve.
• It gives you the opportunity to get involved in decisions and governance, without becoming a full trustee.
• It helps to bring the community closer together.
